Quarantivity Zines: Creative Tool for Reflection & Planning

--

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be highlighting educators who are supporting student learning & navigating complexity during the COVID-19 crisis.

Meet Mike.

Mike is a Teacher, Designer, and Coach in San Diego, CA.

The Creative Genius Quarantivity Zines are tools for reflecting on experiences and planning next steps. They’re designed to be fun, safe and shareable. They can be used as personal reflection tools or as a note-catcher for working with teams or students. “Staying at home during the Coronavirus pandemic has been challenging. These zines were initially created with artist Enrique Lugo and Rodrigo Arancibia from the CARPE College Access Network,” says Mike. “The network was looking for something to use to keep connected to school leadership teams and the first generation college students they work with. As we started playing with design, we quickly realized we wanted to create something to help teams and students process their cares and needs. Eventually, we iterated the zines to work as check-in tools and weekly planning notebooks.”

These Zines are currently being used by Mike’s colleagues throughout the High Tech High Graduate School of Education and with students in some of their K-12 schools. “We’ve also heard from some colleagues in neighbor organizations that have been trying them out!” While reflecting on the creative process, Mike says, “I have loved the iterations and hacks to our designs! We have seen sketch-noting, comic strip art, snowflake cutting and a range of content experiments.”

Check out the Zines here and let Mike know what you think! Want to stay connected with Mike and learn more? You can find him on Twitter here!
